Update on Florida ’s Disaster Medical Assistance Teams

·        DMATs are a component of the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) A federal partnership between HHS, DoD, VA and FEMA.

·        DMATs deploy to presidentially declared disasters to support healthcare operations by operating field hospitals or augmenting staffs at impacted hospitals. Recent missions include Hurricanes Charlie, Frances, Jeanne, Ivan, Katrina, Rita, and Wilma.

·        DMATs are comprised of healthcare professionals (Dr’s, PA’s, ARNP’s, Pharmacists, RN’s, Paramedics, EMT’s and others) who become credentialed as intermittent federal employees.

·        Federal credentials provide nationwide licensure, sovereign immunity, workers compensation, and job protection.

·        Deployment is voluntary and personnel are paid under General Service (GS) rates for the appropriate position classification.

·        Training (field training exercises, didactic, and online) is provided to all members to prepare them to provide patient care at disasters.
