For those of you who may not know me, my name
is Scott Tomerlin. I am 2006
graduate of Mercer Unviersity College of Pharmacy and have been given the
opportunity to be your newsletter editor. Thanks to Kim Giacomelli, our past
Newsletter Editor, for her outstanding job the past few years to the
organization! Please let me know if you know of any pharmacists or
technicians who would like to be added to this listserv as we are always
looking for new members.

Upcoming
Meetings and CE opportunities!
The next meeting of the Brevard County Pharmacy
Association will be on Sunday night,
February 18th at the Hotel Imperial, .
The subject will be on the new heart failure medication, Ranexa, and
will be sponsored by CV Therapeutics. Please call the hotline 633-9579 to
place your RSVP as well as to make your request of meat. The meeting will
count as a 1 hour CE credit.
On Wednesday,
February 21st from 9am-12pm at Sea Pines Hospital, Maggie
Daly Pharm.D and Dr. Cross will be presenting a 3
hour CE credit on “The Drug Culture vs. Drug Therapy (Risk vs. Benefit
in Children) as related in children with ADHD” as well as Dr Cross will
speak on a topic regarding children and suicide.

Cesamet®(nabilone)-
Antiemetic/Cannabinoid
Indications: Management of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting
Dosage: 1-2mg twice
daily
Usually given 1-2 hours prior to oncolytic agent
Gardasil®-
Known as a Quadrivalent Human Papillomavirus (Types 6, 11, 16, 18)
ecombinant Vaccine
Indications: Girls and women ages 9-26
Prevention
of cervical cancer and genital warts
Dosage:
0.5 mL
intramuscularly (IM) once
0.5mL IM once 2 months after first dose
0.5
mL IM once 6 months after first dose
Januvia®(sitagliptan)-
DPP-4 inhibitor
Indications:
Usually given alone or in combination with Metformin or Thiazolidinedione
Dosage: 100mg twice daily with or without food.
Noxafil®(posaconazole)-
Antifungal, oral liquid
Indications: Prevention of Aspergillus and Candida infections in the
immunocomprimised
Dosage: 200mg three times daily with full meals

Disaster Medical Assistance Teams
·
DMATs
are a component of the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) A federal
partnership between HHS, DoD, VA and FEMA.
·
DMATs
deploy to presidentially declared disasters to support healthcare operations
by operating field hospitals or augmenting staffs at impacted hospitals.
Recent missions include Hurricanes Charlie, Frances, Jeanne, Ivan, Katrina,
Rita, and Wilma.
·
DMATs
are comprised of healthcare professionals (Dr’s, PA’s, ARNP’s,
Pharmacists, RN’s, Paramedics, EMT’s and others) who become credentialed
as intermittent federal employees.
·
Federal
credentials provide nationwide licensure, sovereign immunity, workers
compensation, and job protection.
·
Deployment
is voluntary and personnel are paid under General Service (GS) rates for the
appropriate position classification.
·
Training
(field training exercises, didactic, and online) is provided to all members
to prepare them to provide patient care at disasters.
